Galvan Open Back

Galvan Open Back Fly Reels
The Open Back reel was introduced to the market in March
of 1999. The Open Back incorporates a large arbor for
a few reasons. First,
the large diameter on the Open Back dramatically increases
retrieve speed. Line is picked up much more rapidly than
with a conventional spool. Second, on a long running fish,
a conventional reel will spin faster and faster as more
and more line is taken out. The resulting increase in
drag is often enough to pop a light tippet. With a large
arbor spool, drag tension remains almost constant as more
line and backing are pulled from the reel, thus reducing
the chances of breaking off a big fish. Finally, line
is stored in bigger loops, thus reducing the line coil
memory and those annoying loops that come off near the
bottom of a conventional spool.
The drag system is made from stainless steel and Ertalyte
(a state-of-the-art, heat and wear-resistant thermoplastic
unlike anything else on the reel market.) The
Ertalyte disc is used as a brake mechanism. It is sandwiched
between stainless steel surfaces to cause smooth, constant
drag pressure in any setting. The spool is riding on two
stainless steel ball-bearings to insure smoothness as
the fish takes line. The spool has two pins on the bottom
that drop into the stainless steel ring. Turning the spool
one way will allow the spring inside the stainless steel
ring (clutch) to turn freely; the other way will engage
the drag. It is a simple design, but very effective. The
Standard and Open Back reels utilize the same drag system.
Start-up inertia is virtually non-existent, and the long,
smooth transition from light to heavy drag settings will
protect the finest tippets. The retrieve is silent, with
a pleasing quiet outgoing click.
All Galvan Open Back reels are available in semi-gloss
black, green or clear finish with stainless steel or brass
accents.
